About AP Coursework

Advanced Placement (AP) is a program created by the College Board that offers college-level coursework and examinations to high school students in 38 subjects. Each high school offers a different set of AP courses after the course is audited and approved by the College Board. Each AP Course culminates with an optional AP exam, which is administered within a two-week period beginning with the first Monday of May.

The number of students taking AP exams has steadily increased in the last decade. Some colleges use AP exam scores to exempt students from introductory coursework. Other colleges use the course to place students in higher level classes, and some colleges do both.

AP exams scores are reported on a 1-to-5 scale as follows:

5 – Extremely well-qualified
4 – Well-qualified
3 – Qualified
2 – Possibly qualified
1 – No recommendation

Each college’s policy is different, but virtually all colleges require a minimum score of at least 3 or 4 to receive college credit. According to the College Board, 31% of colleges consider AP coursework when making scholarship decisions.
